Black & White Restaurant best in Taranaki

The people have chosen Black & White Restaurant in Hawera for the Beef and Lamb People’s Choice Award in the Taranaki region.

After 6 weeks of voting, Black & White Restaurant held the highest rating in the competition.

Black & White chef, Rene Fritzenwanker, was thrilled with the win.

“We are delighted, it’s amazing.  We are a new restaurant so this has come at a good time for us.  We sold a lot of beef and lamb during the promotion, we love the product,” says Fritzenwanker.


The competition aims to profile and reward the excellent standard of beef and lamb available in New Zealand restaurants.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand CEO, Rod Slater, says all the participating restaurants  are already proven to be offering the best beef and lamb cuisine in the country and the public’s endorsement is further evidence of their excellence.

“Those involved in the competition hold the Beef and Lamb Excellence Award, the criteria for which are assessed annually by culinary experts and the Award only given to those who are consistently providing a top quality eating experience,” says Slater.

This standard of excellence was endorsed by the public during the competition; out of 4,000 diners who placed votes across the country, an impressive 97% rated their beef and lamb dining experience as a 4 or 5, out of 5.

“Having this competition provides another check that these restaurants are at the top of their game when it comes to beef and lamb cuisine and this result was better than even we expected. It shows the food service industry is truly delivering to both domestic and international diners with its beef and lamb cuisine offering,” says Slater.

Diners will be able to identify Black & White and other regional People’s Choice winning restaurants by the gold striped plate hanging in each restaurant.
